Choosing a Dialing Mode Without Getting Yourself in Trouble

Preview, power, progressive and predictive. What each actually does, why predictive is not simply the fastest option, and how to decide.

Neo Dialer campaigns run in one of four modes, and each campaign picks its own — so a careful high-value list and a high-volume outreach list can run at the same time under completely different pacing.

The modes are usually presented as a speed ladder. That framing is what gets people into trouble.

Preview

The agent sees the contact record and decides when to dial. Nothing happens until they press call.

Use it when the conversation matters more than the volume. Enterprise sales, clinical follow-up, anything where walking in cold is worse than dialling fewer numbers.

The cost is throughput, obviously. Also that idle time is invisible — an agent reading a record and an agent reading the news look identical.

Power

The system dials the next contact automatically as soon as the agent finishes wrapping up. One call at a time.

Use it when you want automation without risk. No overdialing, so no abandoned calls, ever.

This is the right default for most teams moving off preview, and a lot of operations never need to go further.

Progressive

The system dials ahead as agents free up, so a call is already ringing when an agent becomes available.

Use it when you have enough list and enough agents that the seconds between calls add up. The trade-off is that a call can connect a fraction before the agent is fully ready.

Predictive

Pacing adapts to observed answer rates and agent availability, dialling more lines than there are free agents on the assumption that not all will answer.

Use it when you have real volume and enough agents for the pacing to have something to predict. With two or three agents there is no statistical signal — you will get worse results than power, plus abandoned calls.

The part that is not about speed

Predictive works by overdialing. When more people answer than expected, some calls are abandoned — the person picks up and there is no agent.

Abandoned-call rates are regulated in many jurisdictions. This is not a performance tuning question, it is a compliance question, and it is one you have to answer before you turn the mode on rather than after.

If you are not confident about the rules that apply to your programme, run power or progressive. Neither abandons calls, and the throughput difference is smaller than the compliance exposure.

Answering machine detection

AMD runs across all the automated modes. When a machine is detected, the call can drop a pre-recorded voicemail rather than occupying an agent, and the outcome is recorded as voicemail rather than as a connected call.

That second half matters for your numbers. A dialer that counts voicemail as a connect will show you a flattering connect rate that means nothing.

How to decide

  1. Start on preview while you are testing a list and a script.
  2. Move to power once the script works. Most teams stop here.
  3. Move to progressive if agents are visibly waiting between calls.
  4. Consider predictive only when you have the agent count for it and have

answered the abandonment question.
